Students from the Arab Open University – Jordan took part in the National Sports Day, celebrating the Kingdom of Jordan’s 79th Independence Day, through the Unified Champion Schools (UCS) initiative. The event was held under the patronage of His Highness Prince Mired bin Ra’ad and organized by the Jordanian Special Olympics.
The university's women's basketball team, accompanied by their supervisor Dr. Sani Al-Khasawneh, a faculty member at the university, engaged in various inclusive sports activities alongside students with disabilities. This participation aligns with the university's commitment to promoting inclusion and supporting individuals with disabilities, reflecting its dedication to building a cohesive and inclusive community.
The event featured a national inclusive artistic segment, followed by three unified sports games: football, basketball, and bocce. Over 150 athletes, coaches, and volunteers from 18 educational institutions—including universities, public and private schools, and special education centers—participated, all united under the theme of inclusion and equality.
In recognition of their active involvement and continuous support for inclusion and the rights of individuals with disabilities, the Arab Open University – Jordan and its sports team were honored at the conclusion of the event. This acknowledgment underscores the university's deep belief in the importance of fostering an inclusive Jordanian society that embraces all its members.
This initiative is part of a broader regional effort by Special Olympics MENA to expand Unified Champion Schools, aiming to create communities where young people of all abilities are included and celebrated .
