A Master’s thesis was defended at the Faculty of Linguistic Studies at the Arab Open University – Jordan, on Saturday, June 6, 2026, by student Qusay Al-Freihat, specializing in English Literature. The thesis was titled: "Cultural Identity Formation in Laila Halaby's West of the Jordan and Selected Short Stories from Evelyn Shakir's Remember Me to Lebanon: Memory, Exile, and Cultural Negotiation."
The defense committee comprised the following distinguished members:
Dr. Ola Kattaneh – Primary Supervisor and Committee Chair
Dr. Amjad Al-Syouf – Internal Examiner
Dr. Mamoun Al-Zoubi – External Examiner
The thesis explored the formation of cultural identity in Arab diaspora literature by examining the novel West of the Jordan by Laila Halaby and selected short stories from the book Remember Me to Lebanon by Evelyn Shakir. It highlighted the roles of memory, exile, and cultural negotiation in constructing and reshaping cultural identity, as well as the challenges individuals face in maintaining their cultural belonging while integrating into new societies.
On this occasion, we highly commend the efforts of the thesis supervisor and express our profound appreciation to the esteemed members of the defense committee. The Arab Open University extends its warmest congratulations to student Qusay Al-Freihat on this outstanding academic achievement, wishing him continued success and excellence in his academic and professional endeavors.

وتناولت الرسالة تشكّل الهوية الثقافية في أدب المهجر العربي من خلال دراسة رواية West of the Jordan للكاتبة ليلى حلبي وقصص مختارة من كتاب Remember Me to Lebanon للكاتبة إيفلين شاكر، مسلطةً الضوء على دور الذاكرة والمنفى والتفاوض الثقافي في بناء الهوية الثقافية وإعادة تشكيلها، وعلى التحديات التي تواجه الأفراد في الحفاظ على انتمائهم الثقافي أثناء التفاعل مع المجتمعات الجديدة.
